Internet speed test
Measure your download speed, upload speed, ping and jitter — free and without an app. It uses the open-source LibreSpeed engine and Cloudflare's global network, so the test server is usually in or near your city.
How the test works
- Ping and jitter: 10 tiny requests to the test server. Ping is the typical round-trip time; jitter is how much it jumps around.
- Download: your browser downloads random, uncompressible data over several connections at once for up to 12 seconds. The first moments are not counted, so the result isn't dragged down while the connection speeds up.
- Upload: the same in the other direction. The server throws the data away immediately.
- Fast connections finish sooner. Results are in megabits per second (Mbps), the unit internet providers use.
Why results differ between speed tests
- Server location: each test measures the path to its own server. This one uses the nearest Cloudflare data center.
- Wi-Fi: walls, distance and crowded channels often cut speed in half. A cable shows what your line really delivers.
- Other traffic: streaming, cloud backups, game updates or other people on the network share the same line.
- Device and browser: older phones and laptops, battery saver and browser extensions can limit very high speeds.
- VPN: sends everything through another server first — usually slower and with higher ping.
How to read your result
- Download under 5 Mbps: basic browsing and SD video. 25 Mbps+ handles HD streaming and video calls; 100 Mbps+ handles 4K and a busy household.
- Upload under 3 Mbps: video calls may look blurry. 10 Mbps+ is comfortable for calls, live streaming and backups.
- Ping under 30 ms: excellent for gaming. Over 100 ms: calls and games may lag.
- Providers sell speeds "up to" a value. Getting 70–90% of it on a cable is normal; much less, at several times of day, is worth reporting to them.
Tips for a fair result
- Pause downloads, streams and backups on all devices.
- Stand close to the router, or better, connect a cable.
- Turn off VPN for the test, and run it two or three times — at different times of day if speeds vary.
Frequently asked questions
Does the test use a lot of data?
It depends on your speed: roughly 20–100 MB on a typical connection, more on very fast ones. On limited mobile data, use Wi-Fi. If your phone is in data-saver mode, the test asks before starting.
Is anything stored?
DeviTest doesn't store your results or show your IP address. To deliver the test, Cloudflare processes connection data such as your IP address, like any website you visit — see the privacy policy.
Why is my upload much lower than my download?
Most home plans (DSL, cable, many mobile plans) are built that way. Fiber plans are often symmetric.
What is the difference from the latency test?
The latency & jitter test only measures response time with 20 tiny requests (about 10 KB), so it's safe on any data plan. This page also measures speed.
